In today's industrial landscape, accurate temperature monitoring is critical for process control and product quality. The ABB AI563 is a floating thermocouple analog input module designed for precise temperature measurement. It features four configurable thermocouple inputs per module, offering a resolution of 0.1°C for temperature and 16 bits including sign for voltage. This module provides galvanic isolation between channels and the rest of the system, ensuring signal integrity in demanding industrial settings.

Technical Specifications and Performance

The AI563 operates with a process supply voltage rated at 24 V DC, consuming 0.10 A. It includes protection against reversed voltage and overvoltage up to 30 V DC. The module achieves a common mode rejection greater than 120 dB at 120 V AC, which helps maintain accurate readings in high-interference environments. With an analog-to-digital conversion time of 400 ms per channel and a module update time under 1.6 seconds for all channels, the AI563 provides timely data for control systems.

Applications in Modern Manufacturing

In industries such as chemical processing and food production, precise temperature monitoring is essential. The AI563 can be used in furnace temperature control, where its galvanic isolation prevents ground loops from affecting measurements. Another application is in environmental chambers, where multiple thermocouple inputs monitor different zones simultaneously. The module's ability to handle wire loop resistance under 100 ohms ensures compatibility with long sensor runs.

Integration and Compatibility

The AI563 mounts on a top hat rail according to IEC 60715, with a depth of 7.5 mm or 15 mm, or with M4 screws at a fastening torque of 1.2 Nm. It connects via terminals 1 through 8 for signal inputs and terminals 19 and 20 for the process supply voltage. The module draws approximately 5 mA from the 24 V DC power supply at the CPU/communication interface module terminals, making it easy to integrate into existing ABB systems.
