1734-AENTRK Allen-Bradley: Network Configuration Guide

Understanding the 1734-AENTRK Ethernet Adapter

The 1734-AENTRK Ethernet adapter resolves a critical pain point in distributed I/O systems: maintaining continuous network communication in harsh industrial environments. Specifically, it provides a redundant media interface using two Ethernet ports, enabling Device Level Ring (DLR) topology for fault tolerance. Consequently, operators in Oil & Gas and Chemical plants reduce downtime during cable failures, while Manufacturing facilities achieve higher system availability without complex reconfiguration.

Hardware Setup and Physical Connections Guide

Three key technical parameters directly improve production efficiency and equipment lifespan. First, the adapter supports dual-port Ethernet with integrated DLR, which automatically reconfigures the network within 3 milliseconds after a cable break, thereby minimizing production halts. Second, it operates across a temperature range of -20°C to 65°C and withstands 10% to 95% non-condensing humidity, so it reliably functions in unheated outdoor enclosures at remote oil well sites. Third, it requires 24V DC power with 1500V DC isolation, which prevents ground loops and voltage spikes from damaging the module, consequently extending its service life by up to 50% compared to non-isolated alternatives.

Configuring IP Address and Subnet Mask Settings

For field-proven configuration, engineers should apply three practical recommendations. First, assign the initial IP address via BOOTP or DHCP from a dedicated server; this avoids duplicate addresses when commissioning multiple adapters simultaneously. Second, after the controller recognizes the device, switch to a static IP using Rockwell Automation’s BOOTP-DHCP Tool and lock the configuration; this prevents accidental address changes during power cycles. Third, in high-vibration environments like conveyor systems, always use locking RJ45 connectors (e.g., with screw flanges) and secure the Ethernet cable with a strain relief bracket; otherwise, intermittent disconnections cause phantom network faults.

Troubleshooting Network Communication Issues

Q1: Is the 1734-AENTRK still an active product or approaching end-of-life?
A: Rockwell Automation lists the 1734-AENTRK as an active lifecycle product with full support. Therefore, you can obtain replacement units and firmware updates through standard channels.

Q2: Can the 1734-AENTRK directly replace an older 1734-AENT adapter without rewiring?
A: Yes, it provides form-fit-function backward compatibility. However, you must update the firmware to revision 4.1 or later and reconfigure the IP address if the network uses DLR.

Q3: How many POINT I/O modules can one adapter support before performance degrades?
A: The adapter supports up to 25 I/O modules per node, but for time-critical applications, keep the count below 16 modules to maintain a scan rate under 5 milliseconds.

Q4: Does the 1734-AENTRK support CIP Sync for precision time synchronization?
A: No, this model supports standard Ethernet/IP and DLR but does not implement CIP Sync. For synchronized motion control applications, consider the 1734-AENTRX with CIP Sync capability.

Q5: What power supply specifications are essential for reliable operation?
A: Use a 24V DC supply rated for at least 1.5A at 24V, with a Class 2 output. Additionally, install an external surge suppressor if the supply line runs longer than 30 meters to prevent transient damage.
