Technical Insights
Three key parameters directly affect your replacement success. First, the module supports the ControlNet protocol at a maximum data rate of 5 Mbps; you must match this with your existing network infrastructure. Second, its environmental tolerance spans -25°C to +55°C with 5–95% non-condensing humidity — therefore, you can deploy it in many unheated outdoor enclosures. Third, the unit requires a 24V DC isolated power supply (range 19.2–31.2V DC); using a non-isolated supply often introduces ground loops that corrupt network packets. Furthermore, the module’s 850V DC isolation between bus and logic prevents catastrophic failures during lightning-induced surges, extending the lifespan of connected I/O modules.1
Before touching any hardware, you must de-energize the entire rack. Specifically, disconnect the 24V DC backplane power and verify zero voltage with a multimeter. Use a properly grounded wrist strap to avoid electrostatic discharge. Do not rely on the module’s front-panel LEDs as a lockout indicator; they may remain lit due to residual capacitance. Secure wiring in high-vibration environments – Before detachment, mark every ControlNet cable with a permanent label (trunk line, drop line, and termination resistor). In refineries, vibrations loosen the BNC coaxial connectors; therefore, ensure the connectors are tight and tie-wrap cables to the DIN rail within 15 cm of the connector. Otherwise, intermittent contact will trigger network re-initializations.
Remove the module correctly – Press the release latch at the bottom of the housing and pull the module straight out from the base unit. Do not rock or twist the module; this can bend the backplane pins on the adjacent 1794 I/O modules. If the latch feels stiff, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it — but avoid scratching the plastic housing.
Inspect the base unit for debris – Use compressed air (max 20 psi) to blow dust from the backplane connector. Oil mist from chemical processing often creates a conductive film. Clean with isopropyl alcohol (99% purity) and a lint-free wipe, then allow 10 minutes to dry fully.

2. What are the clear indicators that I must replace the module instead of repair?
Specifically, look for the “STATUS” LED flashing red/green sequentially with no network communication. Also, if the module frequently drops off the network despite good cabling, the internal components are likely degrading. Replacement is often the only viable option given the age of the hardware.
3. Can I hot-swap the 1794-ACNR15 without powering down the rack?
No. The module does not support hot-swapping. Power down the entire 1794 chassis (24V DC backplane). Attempting to hot-swap can corrupt the ControlNet schedule and damage the backplane connectors.
4. Is this module backward compatible with older 1794-A and 1794-IB16 modules from the 1990s?
Yes, the 1794-ACNR15 works with all Series A, B, and C 1794 I/O modules. The key compatibility requirement is the ControlNet revision and proper configuration in your software (RSLogix 5000 or legacy tools).
5. What spare parts should I keep alongside the replacement module?
Keep a spare ControlNet tap (1786-TPS) and two 75-ohm (for coaxial trunk) or 120-ohm termination resistors depending on your media.
