Allen-Bradley 1734-485ASC POINT I/O Serial Interface Module

The 1734-485ASC is a critical component for industrial serial communication. This module acts as a bridge between your DeviceNet network and ASCII devices. It connects seamlessly to RS-485 or RS-422 networks. Engineers trust this module for reliable data transmission in harsh environments. The 1734-485ASC ensures your automation system communicates effectively with barcode scanners and printers.

Expert Technical Evaluation & Performance Review

The 1734-485ASC module operates on a nominal 24 volts DC supply. Its voltage range spans from 10 to 28.8 volts DC. This wide range ensures stable operation during power fluctuations. The module draws a minimal supply current of 15mA at 24 volts DC. This low power consumption reduces thermal stress on your control panel. The module belongs to the Rockwell Automation POINT I/O 1734 series. It features a Key Switch Position of 2 for secure configuration.

The module connects to either a 2-wire RS-485 or a 4-wire RS-422 network. This flexibility allows integration with various legacy serial devices. The module uses shielded cables to reduce electrical noise effectively. Electrical noise can disrupt network signals and cause data errors. Shielded cables significantly cut down this electrical discord in your system.

You must ground only one side of the shield cable. Grounding both ends creates a ground loop that causes faults. This ground loop will disrupt your network communication signals. The module does not support a chassis ground on its terminal block. You must make the ground connection directly at the DIN Rail. The metal panel DIN Rail provides the necessary grounding path.

Step-by-Step User & Installation Guide

Mount the 1734-485ASC module securely onto the DIN Rail. The metal panel DIN Rail mounts at your Input-Output Interface. Connect the shielded cable to the appropriate places on the 1734-TB terminal block. The terminal block has clear markings on the module case for guidance. Wire the second end of the terminal cable to your ASCII module. Ensure you connect the RS-485 or RS-422 network correctly.

Power on the device and the ASCII module after wiring is complete. You must set up the ASCII module buffer sizes for operation. The general default notes are 20 bytes for receiving and 20 bytes for transmitting. You can optionally modify these parameters in the configuration file. Adjust the buffer sizes if you need more than 20 bytes for data. You can also modify the I/O message size as desired for your application.

Follow this procedure for sending data to the serial device. Send the data initially to the ASCII module from your controller. The ASCII module then transmits the data to the serial device. The module transmits characters from the DeviceNet master through the I/O message terminal. The module transfers the received character string only under strict conditions.

The module detects the defined Transmit Character Buffer Length or the End-of-String Terminator. When either condition is fulfilled the module saves the string value. The module stores this value in the DeviceNet string data internal buffer memory. It then remits the string as output to the serial port. This process ensures accurate and complete data transmission every time.
