The Allen-Bradley 1794-IB8 Flex I/O module delivers eight DC sinking inputs. This unit reliably captures discrete signals from sensors and switches. It operates within a voltage range of 10 to 31.2 Volts DC. Engineers value this module for its proven reliability and modular design.

Procurement managers must verify the input type for their application. This module uses current sinking inputs, which require a sourcing output device. It draws a FlexBus current of just 20mA at 5V DC. This low power consumption reduces the load on your system power supply. The module dissipates a maximum of 3.5W at 31.2V DC.

Application engineers should consider the environmental ratings for their cabinet. The 1794-IB8 operates in temperatures from 0 to 55 °C. It also handles relative humidity from 5 to 95% noncondensing. This makes it suitable for many industrial floor environments. The module offers flexibility with multiple communication options.

For specialized needs, D and XT versions are available. The D version provides enhanced diagnostics for predictive maintenance. The wiring is straightforward using the compatible terminal base. The 1794-TB3 unit has three strips of screw clamp terminals. It provides 16 I/O terminals, 18 common terminals, and 18 supply terminals. This organized layout simplifies field device wiring. The module’s nominal input impedance is 4.6 kΩ.

This value ensures proper signal levels from your field devices. The off-state voltage is a maximum of 5V DC. The off-state current is a maximum of 1.5mA. These clear thresholds guarantee reliable signal discrimination. The module weighs only 0.19 lbs, making it lightweight for cabinet mounting.

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

First, mount the 1794-TB3 terminal base onto the DIN rail. Position the base at a slight angle and hook it over the top. Slide it tightly against the adjacent adapter module. Push the base down until it locks onto the rail. This provides a secure mechanical foundation for the I/O module.

Next, install the 1794-IB8 module into the terminal base. Ensure the FlexBus connector engages properly with the backplane. You can insert or remove the module under power without issues. This hot-swapping capability is a key advantage of the Flex I/O system. It saves time and prevents system restart inefficiencies.

Now, wire your field devices to the terminal base. Connect your sinking input devices to the top terminal strip. This strip contains 16 terminals labeled 0 through 15 for I/O connections. Connect the common wire to the middle terminal strip. Use terminals B-16 and B-33 for the -V Common connection.

Connect the positive supply voltage to the bottom terminal strip. Use terminals C-34 and C-5 for the +V Voltage In connection. For daisy-chaining power to adjacent modules, use the designated terminals. Use C-34 (+) and B-16 (-) for supply input. Use C-51 (+) and B-33 (-) for supply output to the next base.

Finally, apply power and verify module operation. Check the 16 yellow LEDs to confirm each input channel status. The on-state voltage must be between 10V DC and 31.2V DC. The on-state current must be between 2.0mA and 12.0mA. This ensures the module correctly reads the input signal from your device.
