Allen-Bradley 1746-NI8 SLC 500 Analog Input Module
Product Summary
The Allen-Bradley 1746-NI8 is a high-performance analog input module for the SLC 500 platform. It delivers eight selectable voltage or current channels. This module provides fast, accurate signal conversion for critical automation tasks.
Expert Technical Evaluation & Performance Review
High-Resolution Signal Conversion
The 1746-NI8 module uses a successive approximation converter for reliable data. It features a 16-bit resolution for precise measurement of analog signals. This design supports voltage and current inputs from sensors.
The module accepts voltage ranges like 0-10V dc and 1-5V dc. It also handles current signals from 4-20 mA up to +/-20 mA. The update time is a fast 6 milliseconds for all channels. This speed suits time-sensitive applications that require quick data.
Programmable Digital Filtering

The module includes a low-pass digital filter to reduce noise. You can select filter frequencies from 1 Hz to 75 Hz. This flexibility lets you balance noise rejection against response speed.
The step response ranges from 0.75 to 730 milliseconds based on the filter. A higher filter frequency gives you a faster response time. A lower frequency provides better noise filtering for stable signals.
Continuous Autocalibration for Accuracy
The 1746-NI8 performs continuous autocalibration to maintain accuracy. This process compensates for temperature changes and component drift. It ensures consistent performance across the operating temperature range.
The operating temperature spans from 0 to 60 degrees Celsius. The module works in Division 2 hazardous environments. This reliability makes it suitable for demanding industrial applications.
Power and Backplane Specifications

The module draws 200 mA from the 5V DC backplane supply. It also consumes 100 mA from the 24V DC backplane supply. Total backplane power consumption is 14 Watts maximum.
Thermal dissipation is rated at 3.4 Watts. This low heat output prevents overheating in the chassis. You can install the module in any I/O slot except slot 0.
Installation and Wiring Guide
The 1746-NI8 fits into a single slot of the SLC 500 chassis. It is compatible with fixed and modular hardware styles. The module works with SLC 5/01, 5/02, 5/03, 5/04, and 5/05 processors.
Use Belden 8761 or similar cable for wiring. You can connect one or two 14 AWG wires per terminal. The cable loop impedance is 40 Ohms at the voltage source.
The module has a removable terminal block with 18 positions. This design makes installation and maintenance simple. The input impedance is 250 Ohms for current inputs.

Diagnostics and Status Indicators
The front panel has nine green LED indicators for quick diagnostics. One LED shows the module status for overall health. Each of the eight channels has its own status indicator.
These LEDs help you troubleshoot input signal problems. You can quickly see if a channel is active or has a fault. This feature reduces downtime during system checks.
